FAQs
Q. Can we get a family hand cast made? Are my kids old enough?
Yes! Family hand castings are my most fun sessions. Generally, kids older than 3 are best to be casted and they enjoy the process. The rule of thumb is if you can get your kid to stay still with their hand in pancake batter for 1 minute, you're golden :) I've worked with many babies, but it's easier to cast them separately or sleeping with a parent holding their hand.
Q. What can I expect during a life casting appointment?
When you come in for your appointment we'll be creating a mold using a body-safe gel on the skin. After you leave, a cast made of plaster is made from the mold. Most casts are finished within 2-3 weeks.
What types of materials do you make casts out of?
The molds are made from either non-toxic plaster (basic casting) or alginate and plaster (life casting). All are body safe. Lifecasts are made of strong sculpture plaster.
Q. How long does it take?
Hand casting appointments generally take about 30 minutes and body casting appointments are usually around an hour depending on the type of cast. You won't need to hold still for that long. Most casts need you to remain still for 3-7 minutes of critical time and still-ish for up to 20 minutes.
Q. Will it stick to my body or hurt to take off?
Any part of the body that will be casted will be covered in a barrier cream. This is to prevent the plaster from sticking to your skin and hair. The more hair on an area, the more cream recommended.
Q. I want to get a belly cast done during my pregnancy. Is there a certain time that is best to cast?
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Belly casting is a perfect way to honor such a special time in your life. The casting process can be done at any time, but many choose to have the cast done between 30 and 36 weeks of pregnancy when their bellies are full. However, any time that you feel proud is a good time to cast.
Q. Can my partner or children come?
Absolutely, I love when partners, family and friends want to be involved in the process.
Q. Where does the body casting take place?
I take most of my appointments in my studio in Seattle, WA. However, I can travel to you for an additional fee.
Q. Can I paint my cast after it is done?
Yes, All casts include a finish. But you're welcome to paint your own after 24 hours. Other ideas include decoupage, painting the baby's name on it, putting the baby's hand prints on it after the birth, have other children help paint, using mosaic.
Q. Are you willing to do a casting at a funeral home?
First off, my deepest condolences. It is an honor to create a casting for your family. Yes, I do occasionally take castings appointments at funeral homes. There are additional fees due to travel, difficulty of the job, and extra impression I will take to make sure the mold is complete.
